Tour de France 1998
21 stages + prologue, 3,877.1km.
For the first time, the Tour visited Ireland - the prologue was in Dublin, Stage 1 started and ended in Dublin and Stage 2 ran from Enniscorthy to Cork; then the teams sailed to Roscoff in Brittany for the start of the rest of the race. The number of teams was reduced from 22 to 21 in order to also reduce the number of riders, this having been declared the reason for a large number of crashes in 1997.

British rider Chris Boardman, a time trial specialist, won the prologue and started the race in the maillot jaune for the third time in his career. Erik Zabel took it in Stage 2, then lost it to Bo Hamburger the next day; next it went to the Australian Stuart O'Grady who kept it for three stages until 1997 winner Jan Ullrich got it in Stage 7. Ullrich handed it over to Laurent Desbians the following day but won in back in Stage 9 and, a few days later, looked very much as though he was going to keep it.

Then the race reached the Alps and Marco Pantani blew it apart. 48km from the end of Stage 15, he attacked so hard on Galibier that Ullrich was left reeling, completely and utterly unable to respond to the Italian's power. Pantani even stopped on the way to put on a rain jacket, but still took 8'57" from the man who was no longer his rival and finished the stage as overall leader with an advantage of 3'53" over new second place Bobby Julich (and 5'56" on Ullrich). The following day, Ullrich had to win simply to remain in contention and he did a very impressive job of doing so, leading the peloton over the stage's fifth and final climb; but Pantani stayed with him, and the gap between them remained the same. The German made up time with more superb performances, including his excellent ride in the Stage 20 time trial when he took back 2'35"; but what Pantani had done on Galibier was insurmountable and he won by 3'21" overall.

Pantani was one of the finest grimpeurs in cycling history; had it not have been for the problems he would later face, leading to his tragic death on Valentine's Day in 2004, he might even have topped the achievements of Federico Bahamontes and Charly Gaul. It is, therefore, a great shame that his only Tour victory was overshadowed by the scandals that hit the 1998 race. The first the world knew about a massive investigation into doping was when the Festina team's Belgian soigneur Willy Voet was stopped at the French border in a car packed with enough drugs to open a small but well-stocked pharmacy (he tells his story in his book, Breaking the Chain; a must-read despite suffering a little from Voet being a soigneur rather than a writer). Next came police raids on the teams' hotels, with another huge stash of doping products being seized from the TVM team, then a riders' protest in Stage 17 and the nullification of the stage. It didn't end there and, before long, what became known as the Festina Affair mushroomed into the biggest and most damaging scandal to have ever hit cycling and its effects are still being felt to this day.

Gérard Saint, born on this day in 1935, was a French cyclist who won the overall Combativity award and came ninth in the General Classification at the 1959 Tour de France. e became known as a good all-rounder, despite being unusually large at 1.91m tall for a rider who did as well in the mountains as he did, and was popular among fans because he worked as an unskilled farm labourer before becoming a professional cyclist. He died on the 16th of March 1960 after crashing his Citroen ID into a tree. A stadium in Argentan, the town of his birth, is named in his honour.

Ingrid Haringa, born in Velsen, Netherlands on this day in 1964, began her athletic career as a speed skater. She made her debut in international track cycling at the World Championships of 1991, where she won the Sprint and the Points race; then successfully defended the Points title for the subsequent three years.

Jan Ullrich
Jan Ullrich, born in Rostock on this day in 1973, was the first - and to date, only - German rider to win the Tour de France, his 1997 victory being credited as the inspiration for a massive upturn in interest in the sport in his home nation.

Ullrich - like Viatcheslav Ekimov, Alexandr Vinokourov, Jens Voigt and many other talented riders from the former USSR and Eastern Bloc - is the product of a Soviet sports academy, facilities to which young teenagers displaying athletic promise would be sent in order to be developed into the finest sportsmen and women they possibly could be, ready to go out into the world and demonstrate the glorious might of what passed for Communism in the Bloc. The school somehow carried on for two years after the Wall fell, with Ullrich, several other students and their trainer Peter Sager joining a Hamburg amateur cycling club after it finally closed. In 1994, less than one year later, he was approached by Telekom manager Walter Godefroot with a professional contract and made his mark almost immediately with a time trial bronze at the World Championships.

Things went quiet for a year and a half after that with the rider only appearing in the cycling press when he stood on the podium at the Tour du Limousin and Tour de Suisse. He wasn't hibernating through the rest of the year, however - he was winning stages and races in Germany and Russia, where the competitive scene was largely ignored by the rest of the world at the time. He also won his Time Trial National Championship in 1995. The rest of the time? Well, he was doing what East European sports academy students do - training, training and training.

Then he entered his first Tour de France in 1996; earning the respect of cycling fans everywhere when he turned down a place at the Olympics because, in cycling, the Tour is the ultimate, the most prestigious event bar none. He finished 2nd overall and won the Youth Category, further charming fans when he had the grace to rubbish comments that he'd have won had he not have had to assist Bjarne Riis whom, he said, had inspired the whole team to try harder. Indurain, winner of five Tours, told the world that Ullrich was also going to win before long. He had, noticeably, suffered in the mountains that year and lost significant amounts of time; so he responded the only way he knew how - he trained in the mountains. On the mountainous Stage 10 from Luchon to Andorra Arcalis in 1997, Riis showed signs of cracking. Realising that his leader was not going to win the stage, Ullrich fell back from the peloton to his team car and ask permission to attack. Permission was granted - and then he dropped Marco Pantani and Richard Virenque, the greatest climbers of the 1990s. He won the stage by more than a minute and wore the yellow jersey for the first time in Stage 11. Stage 12 was an individual time trial, which he won by three minutes. That, along with several other respectable stage results, won him the overall General Classification, the Youth category and 2nd place in the Mountains Classification.

1998 brought the infamous Tour that became known as the Tour de Dopage, in which Ullrich won Stages 7, 17, 20 and a third Youth Category, this time coming 2nd overall behind Pantani. In 1999, he won the Vuelta a Espana and became the World Time Trial Champion, in doing so convincing the world that he had another Tour win in his legs - however, it would not come to pass because in 2000 Lance Armstrong won his first and became, to all intents and purposes, unbeatable for the next six years. Ullrich was condemned to become the Eternal Second which, he says, was a prime factor in the depression he entered and which, as is the way with depression, brought with it a series of physical illnesses. He would also face trouble with the police when he was caught drunk-driving and had his licence suspended. A month later, he was caught out in an anti-doping test that revealed traces of amphetamines and was given a six-month ban - the minimum since the court agreed that he had taken the drug, along with ecstasy, for recreational purposes rather than to improve athletic performance while out with a broken leg and there was no evidence to suggest that he had taken it again since returning to competition.

2003 looked better. For the first time in many years, he was not a favourite to win the Tour and the reduced pressure seemed to suit him well. Things took a downturn in the first week of the Tour when he fell sick, but he recovered well and got to within a minute of Armstrong. At one point, Armstrong crashed hard when his handlebars caught on a bag being waved by a spectator and Ullrich waited for him to catch up. Had he have attacked, he might have won another victory; but he can apparently recognise the difference between an honourable victory and a hollow one. In 2004, he finished 4th overall - a result with which most riders would be pleased but for him, a small disaster as it was the first time he had finished lower than 2nd. In 2005 - after crashing through the back window of his team car when it stopped without warning in front of him and a nasty crash later on a mountain stage that left him with serious and painful bruising - he finished 3rd.

Armstrong retired in 2005, telling the world that his decision was permanent, and Ullrich decided he'd continue racing for another season or two. Though now 31, the age at which many riders begin to think of retirement (well, except for sports academy cyclists, that is. Ekimov kept going into his late 30s, Vinokourov retired after a crash in the 2011 Tour de France but then returned later in the year when he was 39 and Jens Voigt, at 41, is still mounting the most fearsome repeated attacks in the Grand Tours), he looked to be on better form than ever at the start of the 2006 season - noticeably leaner and with a new springiness in his calves as he turned the cranks. A back problem had forced him to abandon the Giro d'Italia in great pain, but he seemed well-recovered in the week before the Tour. Then, his name having been one of those that came up in Operacion Puerto, he was banned from competition one day before the race was due to start.

Ullrich successfully obtained a gagging order from a German court against a journalist who claimed - with little evidence - that the rider had made a payment of €35,000 into a bank account belonging to the notorious Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes; but while he was on his honeymoon later that year his house was raided by anti-doping officials who obtained DNA samples subsequently used to prove "beyond doubt" that nine bags of blood discovered in Fuentes' offices belonged to the rider, who announced his retirement on the 26th of February in 2007. He continued to insist that he had never doped, and was allowed to keep an Olympic medal when an IOC investigation found insufficient evidence to suggest that he had cheated in the 2000 Games. In December 2011 Ullrich appeared before the Court for Arbitration in Sport, leading to brumours that he would confess to using drugs throughout his career. In February the following year he was found guilty and stripped of all results gained since May 2005.


Vladimir Efimkin was born in Kuybyshev, Russia on this day in 1981. His professional career began with Barloworld in 2005, the year he won both the General Classification and Youth Category at the Volta a Portugal after the more experienced riders in the peloton failed to take the virtually unknown Russian seriously. In 2006, he came 2nd in Stage 10 at the Giro d'Italia and then won Stage 4 at the Vuelta a Espana one year later. finishing in 6th place overall. He finished Stage 9 of the Tour de France in 2nd place in 2008, coming second to Riccardo Riccò who was subsequently disqualified during one of the most notorious doping scandals since Operacion Puerto. In 2011, now racing with US-based Pro Continental Team Type 1, he came 5th overall at the Tour of Hainan and 9th in the Tour of China. Vladiimir's twin brother Alexander Efimkin was also a professional cyclist. Alexander began his professional career two years earler is GS Pragmo and remained with them for four seasons, winning a number of races; he then joined Barloworld when his brother left in 2006, when he was second at the National Championships, and stayed for two years. In 2007 he enjoyed four victories including the General Classifications at the Giro del Capo and the Settimana Ciclistica Lombarda, then moved on to QuickStep for 2008 and came third on Stage 19 at the Giro d'Italia before switching to AG2R for 2009 and 2010, scoring his best ever Grand Tour result in the second season with the Belgian team when he was 19th overall at the Giro. For 2011 and 2012, the final seasons of his career, he rode with the US-based Team Type-1, winning the Tour of Turkey in 2011.

Eric Boyer was born on this day in Choisy-le-Roi, France in 1963. During his professional racing career, he finished the 1988 Tour de France in 5th place overall, won Stages 2 and 15 at the 1990 Giro d'Italia and Stage 4 in 1991. In 1992, he won the Tour du Limousin and Stage 8 at the Tour de Suisse, then the Route du Sud in 1993. After retiring at the end of the 1995 Season, Boyer worked as a journalist and later became manager of the Cofidis team.

Gilbert Glaus, born in Thun, Switzerland on this day in 1955 (some sources claim he was born a day later) won an impressive string of victories early in his career including twelve prestigious races in his home nation and became an Amateur World Champion in 1978. He became National Champion four years later, after turning professional and won Stage 10 at the Tour de l'Avenir, a race that serves as a means to find riders likely to perform well in Grand Tours of the future. Winning Stage 7a at the Critérium du Dauphiné in 1982 seemed to confirm that he'd impress in his first Tour de France later that season, as indeed proved to be the case - three top 20 finishes wasn't a bad result at all for a debutante. In 1983, he won the final stage into Paris, came 2nd in Stage 4, 3rd in Stage 7 and 4th in Stage 20.

It was obvious that 1984 would bring good things - especially when he won the GP Kanton Genève and GP Kanton Zurich and six other podium finishes early int he season. He rode the Giro d'Italia and finished Stage 6 in 2nd place, but otherwise resisted temptation to ride hard and thus preserved his legs for the Tour. Unfortunately, things didn't quite work out - although he finished 3rd in Stage 6 and 6th in Stages 21 and 23, sixteen stages in which he finished outside the first 100 riders left him with an abysmal total elapsed time more than four hours behind winner Laurent Fignon; and so he became Lanterne Rouge.

His career wasn't finished yet, however - being Lanterne Rouge has its advantages, for a start, and any rider "lucky" enough to receive the "honour" can make a good living from the pay he receives to appear at local criterium races. Also, failure in the Tour de France does not mean failure as a cyclist - the Grand Tours are so far beyond anything else that merely finishing one, with any time, is indication of a rider's strength and talent; so Glaus continued to race. In 1985, he won the Swiss Aarwangen and Meyrin races and 1986 brought perhaps his greatest victory, Bordeaux-Paris. He entered the Tour twice more, in 1986 and 1987, but never again got near the podium, then finished off his career as he'd started with a string of victories in Swiss events and retired in 1982.

Born in La Ferté-Bernard, France on this day in 1987, Nicolas Edet was a successful amateur cyclo cross and mountain bike rider, then dedicated himself to road racing from 2006. He never planned on a career in sport, however: after passing his exams in 2008 (he's a qualified industrial engineer) he decided to take a year out before entering the workplace, and spent his time racing. He came fourth at the Under-23 Paris Tours and tenth at the U-23 National Championships, which convinced him to have another year on the bike - and came second at the Trophee de l'Essor.

Edet received an offer of a trainee position with Cofidis in 2010 and he has stayed with the team ever since. A series of top ten finishes from 2009 onwards always suggested that he was going to enjoy a successful career, but after winning the Tour de France Conte Cycliste, Stage 4 at the Tour de Pays de Savoie and Stage 5 at the Giro della Valle d'Aosta in 2010 he entered a two-year period during which he won nothing at all. Further top tens convinced the team to keep him on the books, however, and in 2013 he repaid their faith with an unexpected overall King of the Mountains victory at the Vuelta a Espana.


Dennis van Winden, a rider with Rabobank since 2007 and, since the bank's decision to end its support of men's professional cycling in the wake of the Lance Armstrong scandal, Belkin, for whom he will ride in 2014, was born in Delft on this day in 1997. He turned professional in 2006 with B&E before signing up to Rabo's Continental team for three seasons, then took his place on the ProTour team for 2010. In 2009, he became National Under-23 Champion and won Stage 9 at the Tour de l'Avenir; in 2011 he finished the prologue of the Tour de Romandie in 6th place and in 2012 he was third on Stage 1 at the Vuelta a Espana but suffered in the mountains later on, finishing in 164th place, 11 from last.


On this day in 1950, an unknown 16-year-old French hopeful named Jacques Anquetil became the proud owner of his very first racing licence.


On this day in 2011, Mexico City awoke to discover that cycling activists had painted a 5km long "guerilla cycle lane" leading into the centre of the city. The lane took eight hours to paint and road signs alerting motorists and cyclists to its presence had also been erected. As the lane was designed to draw attention to the fact that the Mexican government has reneged on its promise to create official cycle lanes, it ended at Congress Hall.

Ullrich was condemned to become the Eternal Second which, he says, was a prime factor in the depression he entered and which, as is the way with depression, brought with it a series of physical illnesses. He would also face trouble with the police when he was caught drunk-driving and had his licence suspended. A month later, he was caught out in an anti-doping test that revealed traces of amphetamines and was given a six-month ban - the minimum since the court agreed that he had taken the drug, along with ecstasy, for recreational purposes rather than to improve athletic performance while out with a broken leg and there was no evidence to suggest that he had taken it again since returning to competition.

2003 looked better. For the first time in many years, he was not a favourite to win the Tour and the reduced pressure seemed to suit him well. Things took a downturn in the first week of the Tour when he fell sick, but he recovered well and got to within a minute of Armstrong. At one point, Armstrong crashed hard when his handlebars caught on a bag being waved by a spectator and Ullrich waited for him to catch up. Had he have attacked, he might have won another victory; but he can apparently recognise the difference between an honourable victory and a hollow one. In 2004, he finished 4th overall - a result with which most riders would be pleased but for him, a small disaster as it was the first time he had finished lower than 2nd. In 2005 - after crashing through the back window of his team car when it stopped without warning in front of him and a nasty crash later on a mountain stage that left him with serious and painful bruising - he finished 3rd.

Armstrong retired in 2005, telling the world that his decision was permanent, and Ullrich decided he'd continue racing for another season or two. Though now 31, the age at which many riders begin to think of retirement (well, except for sports academy cyclists, that is. Ekimov kept going into his late 30s, Vinokourov retired after a crash in the 2011 Tour de France but then returned later in the year when he was 39 and Jens Voigt, at 41, is still mounting the most fearsome repeated attacks in the Grand Tours), he looked to be on better form than ever at the start of the 2006 season - noticeably leaner and with a new springiness in his calves as he turned the cranks. A back problem had forced him to abandon the Giro d'Italia in great pain, but he seemed well-recovered in the week before the Tour. Then, his name having been one of those that came up in Operacion Puerto, he was banned from competition one day before the race was due to start.

Ullrich successfully obtained a gagging order from a German court against a journalist who claimed - with little evidence - that the rider had made a payment of €35,000 into a bank account belonging to the notorious Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes; but while he was on his honeymoon later that year his house was raided by anti-doping officials who obtained DNA samples subsequently used to prove "beyond doubt" that nine bags of blood discovered in Fuentes' offices belonged to the rider, who announced his retirement on the 26th of February in 2007. He continued to insist that he had never doped, and was allowed to keep an Olympic medal when an IOC investigation found insufficient evidence to suggest that he had cheated in the 2000 Games. In December 2011 Ullrich appeared before the Court for Arbitration in Sport, leading to brumours that he would confess to using drugs throughout his career. In February the following year he was found guilty and stripped of all results gained since May 2005.


Vladimir Efimkin was born in Kuybyshev, Russia on this day in 1981. His professional career began with Barloworld in 2005, the year he won both the General Classification and Youth Category at the Volta a Portugal after the more experienced riders in the peloton failed to take the virtually unknown Russian seriously. In 2006, he came 2nd in Stage 10 at the Giro d'Italia and then won Stage 4 at the Vuelta a Espana one year later. finishing in 6th place overall. He finished Stage 9 of the Tour de France in 2nd place in 2008, coming second to Riccardo Riccò who was subsequently disqualified during one of the most notorious doping scandals since Operacion Puerto. In 2011, now racing with US-based Pro Continental Team Type 1, he came 5th overall at the Tour of Hainan and 9th in the Tour of China.

Eric Boyer was born on this day in Choisy-le-Roi, France in 1963. During his professional racing career, he finished the 1988 Tour de France in 5th place overall, won Stages 2 and 15 at the 1990 Giro d'Italia and Stage 4 in 1991. In 1992, he won the Tour du Limousin and Stage 8 at the Tour de Suisse, then the Route du Sud in 1993. After retiring at the end of the 1995 Season, Boyer worked as a journalist and later became manager of the Cofidis team.

Gilbert Glaus, born in Thun, Switzerland on this day in 1955 (some sources claim he was born a day later) won an impressive string of victories early in his career including twelve prestigious races in his home nation and became an Amateur World Champion in 1978. He became National Champion four years later, after turning professional and won Stage 10 at the Tour de l'Avenir, a race that serves as a means to find riders likely to perform well in Grand Tours of the future. Winning Stage 7a at the Critérium du Dauphiné in 1982 seemed to confirm that he'd impress in his first Tour de France later that season, as indeed proved to be the case - three top 20 finishes wasn't a bad result at all for a debutante. In 1983, he won the final stage into Paris, came 2nd in Stage 4, 3rd in Stage 7 and 4th in Stage 20.

It was obvious that 1984 would bring good things - especially when he won the GP Kanton Genève and GP Kanton Zurich and six other podium finishes early int he season. He rode the Giro d'Italia and finished Stage 6 in 2nd place, but otherwise resisted temptation to ride hard and thus preserved his legs for the Tour. Unfortunately, things didn't quite work out - although he finished 3rd in Stage 6 and 6th in Stages 21 and 23, sixteen stages in which he finished outside the first 100 riders left him with an abysmal total elapsed time more than four hours behind winner Laurent Fignon; and so he became Lanterne Rouge.

His career wasn't finished yet, however - being Lanterne Rouge has its advantages, for a start, and any rider "lucky" enough to receive the "honour" can make a good living from the pay he receives to appear at local criterium races. Also, failure in the Tour de France does not mean failure as a cyclist - the Grand Tours are so far beyond anything else that merely finishing one, with any time, is indication of a rider's strength and talent; so Glaus continued to race. In 1985, he won the Swiss Aarwangen and Meyrin races and 1986 brought perhaps his greatest victory, Bordeaux-Paris. He entered the Tour twice more, in 1986 and 1987, but never again got near the podium, then finished off his career as he'd started with a string of victories in Swiss events and retired in 1982.


Dennis van Winden, a rider with Rabobank, was born in Delft on this day in 1997. At the current time, he is very much an up-and-coming rider; having turned professional in 2006 with B&E before signing up to the Rabobank Continental team for three seasons, then taking his place on the ProTour team for 2010. In 2009, he became National Under-23 Champion and won Stage 9 at the Tour de l'Avenir; in 2011 he finished the prologue of the Tour de Romandie in 6th place and in 2012 he was third on Stage 1 at the Vuelta a Espana.

On this day in 1950, an unknown 16-year-old French hopeful named Jacques Anquetil became the proud owner of his very first racing licence.

On this day in 2011, Mexico City awoke to discover that cycling activists had painted a 5km long "guerilla cycle lane" leading into the centre of the city. The lane took eight hours to paint and road signs alerting motorists and cyclists to its presence had also been erected. As the lane was designed to draw attention to the fact that the Mexican government has reneged on its promise to create official cycle lanes, it ended at Congress Hall.

For the first time, the Tour visited Ireland - the prologue was in Dublin, Stage 1 started and ended in Dublin and Stage 2 ran from Enniscorthy to Cork; then the teams sailed to Roscoff in Brittany for the start of the rest of the race. The number of teams was reduced from 22 to 21 in order to also reduce the number of riders, this having been declared the reason for a large number of crashes in 1997.

British rider Chris Boardman, a time trial specialist, won the prologue and started the race in the maillot jaune for the third time in his career. Erik Zabel took it in Stage 2, then lost it to Bo Hamburger the next day; next it went to the Australian Stuart O'Grady who kept it for three stages until 1997 winner Jan Ullrich got it in Stage 7. Ullrich handed it over to Laurent Desbians the following day but won in back in Stage 9 and, a few days later, looked very much as though he was going to keep it.

Then the race reached the Alps and Marco Pantani blew it apart. 48km from the end of Stage 15, he attacked so hard on Galibier that Ullrich was left reeling, completely and utterly unable to respond to the Italian's power. Pantani even stopped on the way to put on a rain jacket, but still took 8'57" from the man who was no longer his rival and finished the stage as overall leader with an advantage of 3'53" over new second place Bobby Julich (and 5'56" on Ullrich). The following day, Ullrich had to win simply to remain in contention and he did a very impressive job of doing so, leading the peloton over the stage's fifth and final climb; but Pantani stayed with him, and the gap between them remained the same. The German made up time with more superb performances, including his excellent ride in the Stage 20 time trial when he took back 2'35"; but what Pantani had done on Galibier was insurmountable and he won by 3'21" overall.

Pantani was one of the finest grimpeurs in cycling history; had it not have been for the problems he would later face, leading to his tragic death on Valentine's Day in 2004, he might even have topped the achievements of Federico Bahamontes and Charly Gaul. It is, therefore, a great shame that his only Tour victory was overshadowed by the scandals that hit the 1998 race. The first the world knew about a massive investigation into doping was when the Festina team's Belgian soigneur Willy Voet was stopped at the French border in a car packed with enough drugs to open a small but well-stocked pharmacy (he tells his story in his book, Breaking the Chain; a must-read despite suffering a little from Voet being a soigneur rather than a writer). Next came police raids on the teams' hotels, with another huge stash of doping products being seized from the TVM team, then a riders' protest in Stage 17 and the nullification of the stage. It didn't end there and, before long, what became known as the Festina Affair mushroomed into the biggest and most damaging scandal to have ever hit cycling and its effects are still being felt to this day.

Gérard Saint, born on this day in 1935, was a French cyclist who won the overall Combativity award and came ninth in the General Classification at the 1959 Tour de France. e became known as a good all-rounder, despite being unusually large at 1.91m tall for a rider who did as well in the mountains as he did, and was popular among fans because he worked as an unskilled farm labourer before becoming a professional cyclist. He died on the 16th of March 1960 after crashing his Citroen ID into a tree. A stadium in Argentan, the town of his birth, is named in his honour.

Ingrid Haringa, born in Velsen, Netherlands on this day in 1964, began her athletic career as a speed skater. She made her debut in international track cycling at the World Championships of 1991, where she won the Sprint and the Points race; then successfully defended the Points title for the subsequent three years.

Stage 5 (map, profile) was the last flat parcours for a few days as 6, 7 and 8 all rate as medium mountain stages. Beginning in Modena, it was a strange sort of stage, 209km in length with hardly any corners - the first 172km looks rather like a massively scaled-up sprint with the only sizable deviation from the line being made necessary by the existence of Bologna. There was a little Category 4 hill at 172.1km, rising to 109m, then three gentle and uncategorised climbs in the 16km after it before the final 14km, which are as flat and as straight as the earlier part of the race all the way to the last kilometre where the terrain rose almost imperceptibly to the finish line in Fano. (history along the route).

As such, there was no surprise that the race was once again hotly contested by the sprinters. Sky, who got things badly wrong on Stage 3 when Mark Cavendish was separated from lead-out man Geraint Thomas in the last 300m and left Matt Goss to take the win unmolested, made certain they didn't make the same mistake again. This time, Ian Stannard led the team into the last stretch before handing over to Thomas, who positioned the Manxman with surgical position 150m from the line before letting him go. When the team gets this right, Cav is unbeatable under these conditions and while Goss gave it his all he simply didn't stand a chance, taking second place with a bike length between them. Partner Peta Todd and their four-week-old daughter Delilah were at the finish to see him in action.

Skychology? Fausto Coppi was well-known as a party animal, often drinking enormous quantities of champagne the night before obliterating his rivals. Or was he? There's quite a bit of evidence that what he really did was paid for the party, bribed party-goers to swear blind he'd been there all night and then got a good night's sleep, knowing that defeat at the hands of a man suffering a terrible hangover is worse than one at the hands of a man in the best of health. Mario Cipollini used a similar technique, and so have several others. 
"We weren’t that bothered whether it was a sprint or not as I didn’t feel great three days after the crash," Cav claimed after his Stage 5 victory. "I was a little bit tired and we did really what the other teams have done and let the others do the work."
So - can Cav quite literally thrash the best of the rest even when he's not feeling his best? Or is he using Coppian psychology?

Brian Bulgac (Lotto-Belisol), riding his first Giro, repaid his team's faith by forming a quarter of a sponsor-pleasing break that attained a lead of 5'40" for a while and even looked like it might last to the end - until what appeared on the altimetry profile to be little more than speed bumps in the final 30km turned out to be far more difficult than anybody (with the exception of the route planners, who probably had a good old laugh as the riders ground their way up) had expected. Once again, crashes took out a few riders as the average speed began to rise. Taylor Phinney(BMC), still bruised as a result of Robert Ferrari's Stage 3 idiocy, was the highest-profile victim. Fortunately he wasn't badly hurt but struggled to make up lost time.

Ramūnas Navardauskas (Garmin-Barracuda), having kept himself well out of the way of danger in the peloton, retains his General Classification lead as the Giro enters Stage 6.

Stage 6 is of similar length at 210km, but with three Category 3s and a Cat 2 it's a different sort of race entirely. The parcours begins in Urbino, a remarkable walled city on a hilltop that, under the patronage of the forward-thinking Federico da Montefeltro (more on him - and his nefarious enemy Sigismondo Malatesta - here), became one of the driving forces behind the European Renaissance. Protected by World Heritage Site status, Urbino remains a spectacular sight with the Duomo Cathedral, the University, the Palazzo Ducale and Albornoz fortress almost succeeding in drawing the eye away from the ugly carparks and modern buildings that have grown up around the base of the hill. The first climb, an uncategorised ascent to 433m, lies 26km to the south-east and is followed by a series of smaller hills, then a 431m uncategorised climb at 78km and the first Cat 3 beginning at 89km as the race reaches Cingoli (birthplace of Pius VIII, who became Pope in 1829 when he was 68, in very poor health and little more than a puppet for Cardinal Giuseppe Albani). The Cat 2 starts at 110km - at 772m, it's much smaller than those still to come but, known as the Passo dello Cappella, it's officially the first col of the 2012 edition. After passing through Treia (where Egyptian statues, unique in this part of Italy, have been discovered by archaeologists) Cat 3 Montelupone (251m) begins at 152km and is followed by two uncategorised hills leading to a final Cat 3, Montegranaro (241m), at 170km. There are two more uncategorised climbs ending with 11km to go, then a slightly downhill section into Porto Sant'Elpidio (where Cipolini won Stage 4 on the 28th of May in 1992, suggesting a sprint finish may be on the cards) and the finish line.

Chongming Island is pancake flat, which means that races almost inevitably end with bunch sprints; a fact that has led some to accuse the Tour of being boring. However, while the majority of today's parcours might not have been to everyone's tastes, the conclusion was anything but boring with a crash (caused, says the official Rabobank race report, by the " wild and uncontrolled sprinting" of the Asian riders) splitting the bunch. 


According to reports, an unspecified number of riders were taken to hospital with suspected broken collarbones and Evgenia Romanyuta (RusVelo) was airlifted to hospital, raising worries that she may be badly injured. Stage 1 also saw a crash shortly before the finish line, which does rather suggest that organisers need to look at making the routes more selective to avoid riders approaching the finish in such a large group.

Winner Monia Baccaille (MCipollini-Giambenini-Gauss) was fortunate to be in front of the crash, but won't feel proud that it was the main reason she now leads GC. Chloe Hosking (Specialized-Lululemon) was second and Shelly Olds (AA-Drink Leontien.nl) third. Baccaille now leads the General Classification by 3" and AA Drink-Leontien.nl takes the Team classification leadership from MCipollini-Giambenini-Gauss with an advantage of 7".

Tour of California to hold women's time trial
After a successful experiment in 2011, the organisers of the Amgen Tour of California have confirmed that they will again hold a women's time trial on the 17th of May - the same day and same 29.6km Bakersfield parcours as the men's Stage 5 race.


The event is by invite only and boasts a $10,000 prize fund, considerably greater than is on offer in most European women's races. After her stunning performance at the Tour of the Gila, last year's winner Krisitin Armstrong will be favourite for victory.

FFC boss David Lappartient confirms Dunkirk corticoid tests were performed
More sources are claiming that Anthony Charteau (Europcar) fell foul of an unannounced anti-doping control at the Four Days of Dunkirk. L'Equipe broke the news, saying that officials carried out tests for corticoids before the final stage and that one rider had been prevented from starting after suspicious values were found. The rider's identity and team has not been officially revealed, but as Chartreau was the only ride not to start it would appear to have been him - though Europcar manager Jean-Rene Bernaudeau claims he abandoned due to a knee problem.

Jan Ullrich, the rider who became the first German to win a Tour de France and was later stripped of results after a messy doping investigation, has a new blog hosted by Yahoo - and the first subject he discusses is, rather unsurprisingly, doping.

"The time of hiding and retreat is over. I have received my punishment. Even if I do not intend to return to professional cycling, cycling will remain love of my life," he begins, then goes on to say that today's young riders should not be tarred with the same brush as he was simply because they are cyclists. "I leave it to each individual reader to decide whether he and she thinks that I deserve a second chance. Cycling has lost nothing of its fascination. There are many young drivers who will not make the same mistakes as the old generation. They deserve support."

Cambridge Police discover stolen bikes
Cambridge Police recovered a vast haul of stolen bikes when they raided a property on the city's Coldham's Lane after Police Community Support Officer Amanda Turnell spotted them hidden behind a shed while investigating another theft. In all, sixty bikes, cutting equipment (used to remove locks) and sections of sawn-off bike racks were removed by officers. A teenager has been arrested in connection with the discovery.

Investigating officer PC Martin Pinyoun said that the bikes will be on display at Parkside Police Station between 5-7pm on the 17th of May. "We are keen to find out if these bikes were stolen but never reported," he added "I urge anyone who has had a bike stolen during the past year to come to Parkside to see if they can identify their bicycle."

The presence of sawn-off sections of racks is a reminder that cyclists need to be careful not just to lock their bikes but also to make sure they're locked to something secure - it's very common to see a bike locked to a chainlink fence or other fixture that can be cut far more easily that the lock; allowing thieves to cut it free and take the bike so that the lock can be removed at their leisure. Unfortunately, many council-provided bike parking facilities are not up to the job.

Jan Ullrich
Jan Ullrich, born in Rostock on this day in 1973, was the first - and to date, only - German rider to win the Tour de France, his 1997 victory being credited as the inspiration for a massive upturn in interest in the sport in his home nation.

Ullrich - like Viatcheslav Ekimov, Alexandr Vinokourov, Jens Voigt and many other talented riders from the former USSR and Eastern Bloc - is the product of a Soviet sports academy, facilities to which young teenagers displaying athletic promise would be sent in order to be developed into the finest sportsmen and women they possibly could be, ready to go out into the world and demonstrate the glorious might of what passed for Communism in the Bloc. The school somehow carried on for two years after the Wall fell, with Ullrich, several other students and their trainer Peter Sager joining a Hamburg amateur cycling club after it finally closed. In 1994, less than one year later, he was approached by Telekom manager Walter Godefroot with a professional contract and made hi mark almost immediately with a time trial bronze at the World Championships.

Things went quiet for a year and a half after that with the rider only appearing in the cycling press when he stood on the podium at the Tour du Limousin and Tour de Suisse. He wasn't hibernating through the rest of the year, however - he was winning stages and races in Germany and Russia, where the competitive scene was largely ignored by the rest of the world at the time. He also won his Time Trial National Championship in 1995. The rest of the time? Well, he was doing what East European sports academy students do - training, training and training.

Then he entered his first Tour de France in 1996; earning the respect of cycling fans everywhere when he turned down a place at the Olympics because, in cycling, the Tour is the ultimate, the most prestigious event bar none. He finished 2nd overall and won the Youth Category, later rubbishing comments that he'd have won had he not have had to assist Bjarne Riis whom, he said, had inspired the while team. Indurain, winner of five Tours, told the world that Ullrich was also going to win before long. He had, noticeably, suffered in the mountains that year and lost significant amounts of time; so he responded the only way he knew how - he trained in the mountains. On the mountainous Stage 10 from Luchon to Andorra Arcalis in 1997, Riis showed signs of cracking. Realising that his leader was not going to win the stage, Ullrich fell back from the peloton to his team car and ask permission to attack. Permission was granted - and then he dropped Marco Pantani and Richard Virenque, the greatest climbers of the 1990s. He won the stage by more than a minute and wore the yellow jersey for the first time in Stage 11. Stage 12 was an individual time trial, which he won by three minutes. That, along with several other respectable stage results, won him the overall General Classification, the Youth category and 2nd place in the Mountains Classification.

1998 brought the infamous Tour that became known as the Tour de Dopage, in which Ullrich won Stages 7, 17, 20 and a third Youth Category, this time coming 2nd overall behind Pantani. In 1999, he won the Vuelta a Espana and became the World Time Trial Champion, in doing so convincing the world that he had another Tour win in his legs - however, it would not come to pass because in 2000 Lance Armstrong won his first and became, to all intents and purposes, unbeatable for the next six years. Ullrich was condemned to become the Eternal Second which, he says, was a prime factor in the depression he entered and which, as is the way with depression, brought with it a series of physical illnesses. He would also face trouble with the police when he was caught drunk-driving and had his licence suspended. A month later, he was caught out in an anti-doping test that revealed traces of amphetamines and was given a six-month ban - the minimum since the court agreed that he had taken the drug, along with ecstasy, for recreational purposes rather than to improve athletic performance while out with a broken leg and there was no evidence to suggest that he had taken it again since returning to competition.

2003 looked better. For the first time in many years, he was not a favourite to win the Tour and the reduced pressure seemed to suit him well. Things took a downturn in the first week of the Tour when he fell sick, but he recovered well and got to within a minute of Armstrong. At one point, Armstrong crashed hard when his handlebars caught on a bag being waved by a spectator and Ullrich waited for him to catch up. Had he have attacked, he might have won another victory; but he can apparently recognise the difference between an honourable victory and a hollow one. In 2004, he finished 4th overall - a result with which most riders would be pleased but for him, a small disaster as it was the first time he had finished lower than 2nd. In 2005 - after crashing through the back window of his team car when it stopped without warning in front of him and a nasty crash later on a mountain stage that left him with serious and painful bruising - he finished 3rd.

Armstrong retired in 2005, telling the world that his decision was permanent, and Ullrich decided he'd continue racing for another season or two. Though now 31, the age at which many riders begin to think of retirement (well, except for sports academy cyclists, that is. Ekimov kept going into his late 30s, Vinokourov retired after a crash in the 2011 Tour de France but then returned later in the year when he was 39 and Jens Voigt, at 40, is still mounting the most fearsome repeated attacks in the Grand Tours), he looked to be on better form than ever at the start of the 2006 season - noticeably leaner and with a new springiness in his calves as he turned the cranks. A back problem had forced him to abandon the Giro d'Italia in great pain, but he seemed well-recovered in the week before the Tour. Then, his name having been one of those that came up in Operacion Puerto, he was banned from competition one day before the race was due to start.

Ullrich successfully obtained a gagging order from a German court against a journalist who claimed - with little evidence - that the rider had made a payment of €35,000 into a bank account belonging to the notorious Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes; but while he was on his honeymoon later that year his house was raided by anti-doping officials who obtained DNA samples subsequently used to prove "beyond doubt" that nine bags of blood discovered in Fuentes' offices belonged to the rider, who announced his retirement on the 26th of February in 2007. He continued to insist that he had never doped, and was allowed to keep an Olympic medal when an IOC investigation found insufficient evidence to suggest that he had cheated in the 2000 Games. However, at the time of writing (Decemeber 2011), he is undergoing trial at the Court for Arbitration in Sport and it is widely rumoured that he may be about to confess to using drugs throughout his career.


Vladimir Efimkin, was born in Kuybyshev, Russia on this day in 1981. His professional career began with Barloworld in 2005, the year he won both the General Classification and Youth Category at the Volta a Portugal after the more experienced riders in the peloton failed to take the virtually unknown Russian seriously. In 2006, he came 2nd in Stage 10 at the Giro d'Italia and then won Stage 4 at the Vuelta a Espana one year later. finishing in 6th place overall. He finished Stage 9 of the Tour de France in 2nd place in 2008, coming second to Riccardo Riccò who was subsequently disqualified during one of the most notorious doping scandals since Operacion Puerto. In 2011, now racing with US-based Pro Continental Team Type 1, he came 5th overall at the Tour of Hainan and 9th in the Tour of China.

Eric Boyer was born on this day in Choisy-le-Roi, France in 1963. During his professional racing career, he finished the 1988 Tour de France in 5th place overall, won Stages 2 and 15 at the 1990 Giro d'Italia and Stage 4 in 1991. In 1992, he won the Tour du Limousin and Stage 8 at the Tour de Suisse, then the Route du Sud in 1993. After retiring at the end of the 1995 Season, Boyer worked as a journalist and later became manager of the Cofidis team.

Gilbert Glaus, born in Thun, Switzerland on this day in 1955 (some sources claim he was born a day later) won an impressive string of victories early in his career including twelve prestigious races in his home nation and became an Amateur World Champion in 1978. He became National Champion four years later, after turning professional and won Stage 10 at the Tour de l'Avenir, a race that serves as a means to find riders likely to perform well in Grand Tours of the future. Winning Stage 7a at the Critérium du Dauphiné in 1982 seemed to confirm that he'd impress in his first Tour de France later that season, as indeed proved to be the case - three top 20 finishes wasn't a bad result at all for a debutante. In 1983, he won the final stage into Paris, came 2nd in Stage 4, 3rd in Stage 7 and 4th in Stage 20.

It was obvious that 1984 would bring good things - especially when he won the GP Kanton Genève and GP Kanton Zurich and six other podium finishes early int he season. He rode the Giro d'Italia and finished Stage 6 in 2nd place, but otherwise resisted temptation to ride hard and thus preserved his legs for the Tour. Unfortunately, things didn't quite work out - although he finished 3rd in Stage 6 and 6th in Stages 21 and 23, sixteen stages in which he finished outside the first 100 riders left him with an abysmal total elapsed time more than four hours behind winner Laurent Fignon; and so he became Lanterne Rouge.

His career wasn't finished yet, however - being Lanterne Rouge has its advantages, for a start, and any rider "lucky" enough to receive the "honour" can make a good living from the pay he receives to appear at local criterium races. Also, failure in the Tour de France does not mean failure as a cyclist - the Grand Tours are so far beyond anything else that merely finishing one, with any time, is indication of a rider's strength and talent; so Glaus continued to race. In 1985, he won the Swiss Aarwangen and Meyrin races and 1986 brought perhaps his greatest victory, Bordeaux-Paris. He entered the Tour twice more, in 1986 and 1987, but never again got near the podium, then finished off his career as he'd started with a string of victories in Swiss events and retired in 1982.


Dennis van Winden, a rider with Rabobank, was born in Delft on this day in 1997. At the current time, he is very much an up-and-coming rider; having turned professional in 2006 with B&E before signing up to the Rabobank Continental team for three seasons, then taking his place on the ProTour team for 2010. In 2009, he became National Under-23 Champion and won Stage 9 at the Tour de l'Avenir and in 2011 finished the prologue of the Tour de Romandie in 6th place.

On this day in 1950, an unknown 16-year-old French hopeful named Jacques Anquetil became the proud owner of his very first racing licence.

On this day in 2011, Mexico City awoke to discover that cycling activists had painted a 5km long "guerilla cycle lane" leading into the centre of the city. The lane took eight hours to paint and road signs alerting motorists and cyclists to its presence had also been erected. As the lane was designed to draw attention to the fact that the Mexican government has reneged on its promise to create official cycle lanes, it ended at Congress Hall.
